Pulling tricks with clothes: how can I hide my pouch?

Belly fat is a problem for most of us and numerous factors could cause you to have a bigger midsection. But most times, it comes when we are middle-aged, after pregnancy or when we eat or drink too much; they don’t call it beer belly for anything. But no matter the cause, a bulging belly is something we all want to eliminate.

Gone are the days when being loud and gaudy was hip. Dressing up classy and carrying it off well is the all-new mantra. But first, you need to get your basics right. Understand your problem areas and strengths. Wear dresses that steer the attention away from your tummy, it could be just a flowy design or pattern that does it for you. It’s also worth mentioning that it is best to stay away from body-hugging clothes unless you are sure of pulling off a bulgy stomach. Choose what you want to make the center of attraction and dress accordingly. How? That’s why you’re here.

There are three tricks to be discussed here: Choose flattering clothes, Accessorize your outfit and keep a good posture.

1. CHOOSE FLATTERING CLOTHES

• Wearing leggings or skinnies with longer, draped or asymmetrical tops: Leggings or stretchy pants that tuck in the tummy should be your best friend. They will fit comfortably around your belly and tuck it in a bit. Also, with so many wonderful tunics and long tops to choose from, you will look fabulous.

• Use a long jacket or sweater to create long lean lines, pulling the eye away from your belly and lengthening your appearance. Try a poncho or a long sweater with a waterfall hemline for a bohemian look, as long as you pair it with a form-fitting garment on the bottom, such as leggings or a skinny pair of pants.

• As much as possible, avoid tight or clingy garments over your belly and choose tops with ruching or drape. A shirt that has extra fabric and texture will trick the eye and hide the bulge around your belly. A top with a lot of detail and fabric pairs perfectly with simple bottoms like a classic pair of black trousers or a pencil skirt.

• Wear shapewear underneath your clothing to smooth your midsection. Specially formulated elastic undergarments can reshape your stomach, pulling in your belly fat and making your clothes fit better. A high-waisted short or a fitted camisole is a good way to pull this trick. These tuck in the unflattering flaps and ties back in the tummy, at least it creates the illusion. These soft, comfortable and tight-fitting undergarment come in a lot of variants, taking full control of your large mid-section.

• Also, wearing the right intimates is a given, but some of us need to pay more attention to a few things others normally wouldn’t. it is important that you choose a bra; that is not loose or sagging, but makes you uptight while giving you the right definition. Also, consider high rise underwear; these help you a great deal. We need to get this one right.

• Embrace dark colors for a slimming effect: Black, charcoal, navy and brown create the illusion of a smaller frame while also hiding wrinkles and any pulling or bulging of fabrics. If your mid-section is larger than your bottom half, create a normal proportionate look by wearing dark colors on top and lighter colors on the bottom, such as khaki pants. Tonal shades can be great for giving you a longer, slimmer look. Create a column of color with your shirt and pants and then add a sleeveless cardigan in a hue from the same color pathway.

• Wear tops over your skirts and pants and don’t tuck them in: Tucking draws attention to your non-existing waist again so better to avoid that. This is because if you tuck your shirt in, you will create a line across your tummy.

In the same sense, don’t wear garments that are too bulky around the tummy area. You don’t want to make that area even bigger with pockets or other embellishments. However, a vertical loose drape could also work as it elongates and does a good job at hiding.

• Choose clothes that accentuate your best features. Play to your strengths by highlighting your arms, shoulders or any other part of your body that makes you feel confident. It will draw attention away from your belly and towards your favorite qualities. Skintight dresses might not be a great idea.

• Don’t emphasize your tummy by adding accessories like belts right on top of them, rather belt higher. When choosing a coat, top or cardigan, you don’t have to avoid belts altogether. Simply make sure that the belt sits higher, so you aren’t drawing attention to your belly at its widest point.

• Colors, patterns, and fabrics; know it all. To begin with, fabrics make a lot of difference; every color and pattern look differently with different fabrics. If you are serious about hiding your tummy, then I suggest you go for dark colors, flowing fabrics and vertical patterns. This is a fail-proof method that generally doesn’t go wrong. Horizontal patterns give it a broad look, thus wear vertical patterns for obvious reasons.

• Layering is another technique that magically hides it all away, shifting the focus anywhere but your tummy. Combinations like a tank top with a plaid shirt; knee-length dresses and a cape; trousers with a shirt and blazer or shrug, work pretty well to your advantage. Layers that are unbuttoned give it a significant effect making you look taller. Make-believe in the truest sense.

2. Accessorizing your outfit

• Wear bold accessories around your neck to draw the eye up. This will emphasize the upper half of your torso. Wear a chunky statement necklace or a top with a bold, detailed neckline. Opt for shirts with broad collars and tie larger knots in their ties, such as a fuller Windsor.

• Carry a purse with longer straps to elongate the body. The straps will create a long and lean visual effect and draw attention to where the bag ends, past you’re your hips. Cross bags, satchels with long handles and hobo purses are all good options.

• Top off your outfit with a hat to add more length. A stylish hat is an easy way to add a little more height to your frame, automatically balancing out any extra weight around the middle. Sun hats, fedoras with wide brims or flat caps are all great ideas.

3. Keep a good posture- yes body posture matters!

• Pull in your tummy. Sucking your stomach muscles to your spine immediately flattens your belly. Additionally, the action of pulling your stomach in supports your spine hereby straightening it.

• Square your shoulders and lift your chest. Maintaining a straight or slightly S-curve in your will help you appear slimmer and prevent your stomach from sticking out. Avoid over-arching your back. Don’t slouch, which will prevent you from tucking your stomach in and will make your belly look bigger than it is.

 • Wear heeled shoes to automatically stand up straighter. Wearing heels naturally improves your posture by rotation your hips to tuck your bottom in and helping keep your back and shoulder straight. Even a classic dress shoe with a small heel can be enough to reap these benefits.

Having known all of these, your shopping experience would be less challenging. Take a minute to understand the ins and outs of each of them. Use these tips to build the block and look at dresses that will not just camouflage the unflattering fat but also make you look stylish and confident.
